Why Do Thais Type "555" in Every Chat?

If you have ever texted a Thai person, you have definitely seen this code. You tell a joke, and they reply: "555" Or if it’s really funny: "555555+"

You might be confused.

  • Is it a typo?
  • Is it an angel number?
  • Is it a secret code?

No. They are laughing at you. (In a good way!)

Here is the simple explanation behind Thailand’s most famous internet slang.

The Math of Laughter

The logic is incredibly simple. You just need to know how to count to five in Thai.

  • Number 5 in Thai is pronounced "Ha" (ห้า).
  • Therefore: 555 = Ha Ha Ha.

It is the Thai equivalent of LOL (Laugh Out Loud). It is much faster to type "555" than to switch the keyboard language to English and type "Hahaha" or "LOL." So, Thais use it everywhere—in Line, Facebook, and X.

The Levels of "5"

Just like "LOL" vs "LMAO," the amount of 5s matters.

  • 55

    • Meaning: A polite chuckle. Or "I see your joke, but it wasn't that funny."

  • 555

    • Meaning: Standard laughter. Haha.
  • 5555555555 (The Long Spam)

    • Meaning: ROFL / LMAO. This is hilarious. I am dying.
  • 555+

    • Meaning: The "Plus" sign adds extra emphasis. It means "Hahaha plus more!" or laughing with tears.

The "Dry Laugh" Variant: ถถถ

Sometimes, you might see a Thai person type "ถถถ". Originally, this was a common typo because the number 5 and the Thai letter (Tho-thung) share the same key on the keyboard.

But today, Thais use it intentionally.

  • 555 = HAHAHA! (Loud, genuine laughter)
  • ถถถ = Heh heh heh... (Dry, sarcastic, or pity laughter)

When to use "ถถถ"

  1. Self-Pity: When you do something stupid and want to laugh at yourself.

    • Example: "I forgot my wallet on a date again. ถถถ"

  1. Sarcasm: When something is tragic but funny.

    • Example: "My boss just gave me more work on Friday evening. ถถถ" (Laughing through the pain).

It’s the Thai equivalent of using the "Crying Laughing" emoji (😂) ironically.

Warning: Don't Use This in China!

This slang is specific to Thailand. If you text "555" to a Chinese friend, they might get worried.

  • In Thai: 5 (Ha) = Laughter.
  • In Chinese: 5 (Wu) = The sound of crying (Wuwuwu). 😭

So, "555" in Bangkok is 😂, but "555" in Beijing is 😭.

Summary

Now you know the code. Next time a Thai friend sends you a funny meme, don't reply with "LOL." Reply with "555".

You will instantly look 100% more local!
