Synopsis
This novel is more than just a ghost story; it is a reflection of the suffering of women in the past, whose lives were strictly controlled by tradition and social expectations. The author, Kaewkao, masterfully weaves the Buddhist concept of Karma into the plot, showing how actions and consequences ripple through time in a logical, inevitable way.
The mystery revolves around a specific object hidden for nearly a century: The Nopphakao Ring.
Unlike a typical ring, this one is shaped like a coiled snake with its hood spread out, encrusted with a diamond and eight other auspicious gems. It lies tarnished and forgotten inside a chest buried deep beneath the house.
It was placed there by the order of Chao Khun Ratchada Pariwat (the husband). In his anger and heartbreak, he ordered his servant to bury every gift he ever gave his wife under the house—intending to bury his memories and their history forever.
When Pha-ob Kaew got married, she was the envy of everyone. Her husband, the noble Chao Khun Ratchada Pariwat, built a magnificent nine-room hip-roofed house as their bridal home, naming it "Ruean Nopphakao" (The House of Nine Gems).
But what appeared to be a palace was actually a prison.
Pha-ob Kaew lived in that house as a prisoner until her last breath. Even in death, her spirit remains shackled to the place, weighed down by a grave accusation: that she was a promiscuous, unfaithful woman—a "Kaki"* of her time.
Bound by invisible chains and a "loop of love" that refuses to break, she wanders the house, searching endlessly for a lost, important object. Years have passed, and new humans have moved into the house. Will they be the key to unlocking the truth? Will the stigma finally be lifted, or is she doomed to be imprisoned in Ruean Nopphakao forever?
(Note: Nang Kaki is a female character in classic Thai literature often associated with infidelity and having multiple lovers.)
